Winding Garments is a piece for solo viola and a rotating motor. Each string is connected to a motor-driven chain using safety pins and fine filaments. When the motor is on, the chain rubs the filaments, making the pins tremble against the strings and creating quiet, unpredictable sounds.
The performer plays around this subtle mechanical activity, adjusting the tension by moving the viola (or their body). The score includes several overlapping notational layers, asking the performer to navigate between fixed and flexible material, manage motor activation, and control the physical tension of the system in real time. The piece explores the balance between control and fragility, and is performed with close amplification.
